AI. Am I Worried?
April 9, 2024
While AI has been a thing for many years, it’s only recently began to impact my life. Now, website page builders can generate content for you. Photo editors can change an entire photo based on what you type into an input field. AI can write content, code, advertisements, blog posts, and pretty much just about anything. I was talking to one of my contractors the other day and he told me a story about how he had Chat GPT write him a rap about Lord of the Rings. The crazy thing was… it was good.
I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t concerned about my career. I’m not concerned with AI creating better websites than me, but I am concerned that it will get to the point where AI generated websites will be so cheap that most people will sacrifice quality for savings. We all know about the writers strike going on currently. How long until we start replacing our designers, developers, SEO specialists, bookkeepers, editors, data entry, account managers, marketers, social media managers etc..?
It’s a scary thought. Millions of people’s jobs could be replaced once AI is advanced enough. So how do I keep that from happening to me?
First off, I’d like to say that I don’t dislike AI. I even use it sometimes to start coding stuff out or generate content. The code and content always require more editing, but it’s a great tool. I see the potential, but It’s simply not advanced enough write complete, functioning, advanced code. I’m sure that one day it will be, and when that happens, you better believe I’ll be using it.
As weird as it may sound, using and knowing this tool will benefit me in the long run. If I stay on top of the AI revolution, I can use this tool to increase my productivity. I know that, unfortunately, many people will flock to AI generated websites when they’re a thing. But I also know that we’re many years away from AI generated sites that have the same user experience, unique designs, and continuity that a real person can provide.
Let’s just hope I’m retired by the time it can do my entire job…
